With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Wayne J. Nelson-a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. Wayne peacefully departed this world on April 11, 2026, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family.
Wayne was born on May 10, 1937, in Pullman, Washington, to Hjalmar and Minnie Nelson. He attended Pullman Public Schools, where he built the foundation for a life marked by curiosity, hard work, and connection to others.
In 1955, Wayne married the love of his life, Esther. Their story began when they were just 12 and 13 years old-a young friendship that grew into a remarkable partnership spanning more than 70 years. In October 2025, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, a rare and beautiful testament to enduring commitment.
Wayne proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard for six years. Following his service, he built a successful career in agricultural sales, working with FMC and Helena, where he was respected for his dedication and work ethic.
A man of many passions, Wayne embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved fishing, camping, RV-ing, and traveling-always ready for the next adventure. His fascination with the skies led him to earn his pilot's license in 1972, and he became an active member of the Porterville Pilots Association, where he enjoyed sharing his love of aviation with others.
Wayne was a man of faith and community. A devoted Methodist, he was also a proud member of the Elks for 65 years and an active participant in the Porterville Jaycees. He gave generously of his time and spirit. Above all, Wayne was known simply as a "really good guy"-a phrase that, while humble, captured the genuine kindness and integrity he lived by every day.
Wayne's greatest joy was his family. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Esther; his daughters, Laurie and Cathy; and his sons, Michael and David. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren, a great-grandfather to fourteen great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandfather to four. His love for his family will continue to be felt for generations.
Though he has journeyed to a new horizon, Wayne's spirit remains a guiding light to all who knew him. As we say goodbye to this extraordinary man, we celebrate the life he lived and the love he gave so freely.
In Wayne's own words:
"How are you? I'm still on this side of the green grass. Sure glad you got to see me."
