Joseph John Wade Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, in Salem, Oregon, at the age of 89. Born on September 30, 1936, in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, he was the cherished son of Joseph John Wade Sr. and Dorothy Selsor. Joseph's life was a testament to hard work, love, and devotion to family.
Joseph's educational journey began at Immaculate Conception Grammar School, followed by Northeast Catholic High School, where he found a passion for teamwork and sports while playing football at St. Joseph's Seminary School. His early employment history was as varied as it was rich; he began as a paperboy and transitioned to a copy boy at the Evening Bulletin at the Philadelphia Newspaper. His strong work ethic led him to become a shoe salesman, and eventually to a long and fulfilling career with the Philadelphia Gas Works, where he served as a serviceman, dispatcher, and supervisor, earning respect and admiration from colleagues before retiring in 1995.
A proud veteran, Joseph served in the US Navy as a machinist's mate on the USS Capricornus. His commitment to service extended beyond his military duties; he was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and the Philadelphia Gas Works Retiree's Association.
Joseph's life was defined by his unconditional love for his family. He met his beloved wife, Irene, at a football game, and they married on May 7, 1959, at St. Ladislaus Church in Philadelphia, PA. Together, they created a warm and nurturing home, welcoming two children, Joe Wade and Sharon Ruban, who have filled their lives with joy. Joseph's unwavering dedication to family was evident in his relentless hard work and sacrifices, which ensured that his children had access to travel, quality education, and a bright future.
He is survived by his loving wife, Irene Wade; his son, Joe Wade; his daughter-in-law, Carla Wade; his son-in-law, Dale Ruban; grandchildren Kelly Wade, Kristen Pick (married to Dave Pick), Dale Joseph Ruban, and Alyssa Ruban; great-grandchildren Trent and Tessa Pick; his sister, Roberta Foley; his brother-in-law, Joe Foley; and many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
Sadly, Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved daughter, Sharon Ruban. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the love he shared.
Joseph was a man of many interests. He was an ardent fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and never missed an opportunity to cheer on his team, often declaring, "Go Birds! Go Eagles!" His passion for life extended to his hobbies, which included hunting, gardening, and fishing. He embraced the great outdoors and shared these experiences with family and friends, instilling a love for nature in those around him.
A memorial service will be held on January 30, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Restlawn Funeral Home, where family and friends are invited to celebrate Joseph's life and mourn his passing. In honor of Joseph's commitment to healing and compassion, the family requests that donations be made to Shriners Hospital in Portland, Oregon, to continue his legacy of caring for those in need.
Joseph John Wade Jr. will be dearly missed but forever remembered for his warmth, kindness, and the invaluable lessons he imparted to his family. May he rest in peace, knowing his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who loved him.
