It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan D. Wickham, a beloved matriarch, devoted wife, and cherished friend, who left this world on June 8, 2025, at the age of 93. Joan was born on June 24, 1931, in Grand Fork, North Dakota, to Otto and Judith Rudrud. She lived a life filled with love, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family and community, leaving behind a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who knew her.
Joan's journey began in a small town, where she was raised on a sprawling 1000+ acre wheat farm that also featured dairy cows. This upbringing instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for family and tradition. After graduating high school in 1949, Joan pursued her education further by attending Bible College in Minnesota, where she not only nurtured her faith but also laid the foundation for a life dedicated to serving others.
In November of 1950, Joan met the love of her life, Ray Wickham, on the stairs of their church in San Diego, California. Their love blossomed, and they married shortly thereafter, enjoying a beautiful journey together that would span over 75 years. Joan's commitment to her husband was evident in every aspect of their life together, and their bond was a testament to true partnership and devotion.
Joan was a remarkable mother to her three children: Diane, Debra, and David. She took immense pride in her role as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, nurturing her family with love and wisdom. She leaves behind seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren who will forever cherish the memories made with their beloved grandmother.
Throughout her life, Joan embraced various roles that reflected her diverse talents and interests. She worked as a dental assistant, a church secretary, and a loan officer, demonstrating her ability to connect with people and make a difference in their lives. After her retirement, Joan found joy in traveling with friends and family, embarking on adventures that enriched her life and allowed her to create lasting memories.
A dedicated member of the Salem First Baptist Church, Joan's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was known for her loving spirit and her unwavering support to those in need. Her characteristics as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and faithful friend will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In her leisure time, Joan enjoyed sewing and crocheting, crafting beautiful garments and items for her family with her own hands. She lovingly sewed most of her children's clothes, creating not just fabric creations, but also memories that would last a lifetime.
Joan will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery on July 8, 2025. The family will hold a memorial service on August 1, 2025. During this time of sorrow, we encourage all who knew Joan to reflect on the love and joy she brought to their lives.
As we say goodbye to Joan, we take solace in the knowledge that her spirit will continue to guide us, and her love will live on in our hearts. She was truly a remarkable woman, and her legacy will be celebrated for generations to come.
Rest in peace, dear Joan. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
