Jesse "Jess" Floyd Krater

Jesse Floyd Krater passed away peacefully at home at the age of 90 on December 21, 2024. Born in Gotebo, Oklahoma to Hazel and Oliver Krater, Jess was raised in Oklahoma until age 9, when his family moved to Oregon, eventually settling in Salem.

Jess graduated from Salem High School in 1952, where he was involved in baseball and choir. Jess had a strong work ethic instilled in him by his mother, he worked various jobs after school and on weekends, primarily crop picking and cannery work, to help support his family.

In 1952, Jess enlisted in the Oregon National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves, where he served until 1959, attaining the rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged.

In his personal life, Jess was married for over 35 years to his beloved wife Carolyn. Together, they shared five children and stepchildren and their families, including seven grand and great-grandchildren.

For over 30 years, Jess was a valued member and branch manager at the Oregon DMV, before retiring in March of 1996. He was involved in various local churches, as an elder in the Foursquare Church, and a member of the choir. Jess lived a life devoted to God, starting each day in prayer for his family and others.

Jess had many hobbies and interests including landscaping, golfing, traveling, biking, and physical fitness. He loved media and music, developing a large home entertainment system and extensive movie collection. In the 1960s, Jess recorded an album with his brothers, their group, The Krater Brothers, performed gospel and folk music for local audiences for 20 years. Jess was also a student of politics, current events, and Bible prophecy, he enjoyed maintaining his vehicles, and since the pandemic, became an avid Amazon shopper.

Known for his kindness, honesty, and generosity, Jess was always happy to help others and was a source of joy and strength to those around him. He had a tender heart and a deep love for family. A caring family man, Jess took pride in his children, stepchildren, and grandchildren, He was hardworking, loved to laugh, and was hospitable to all. Jess will be remembered for his devotion to God, his country, and to his family.

Jess is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn Krater; children Lori Krater and Brian Krater; brothers Jack Krater (Penny) and Thurm Krater (Jan); three stepchildren; seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren; fourteen nieces and nephews, and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Oliver Krater, and his sister, Lela Krater.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, January 17th at 2:00 pm at Restlawn Memory Gardens & Funeral Home in Salem, Oregon.
