James Kittelson

James Kittelson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on December 10, 1928, in Bottineau County, North Dakota, James was the beloved son of Edwin and Mabel Aagren Kittelson. He was predeceased by his three brothers, three sisters, and his grandson, James Axel Kittelson.

James is survived by his devoted wife of 75 and a half years, Jenette Swanson Kittelson, with whom he shared a love story that began in college and was solemnized on November 19, 1950, at Willow Creek Lutheran Church in Overly, North Dakota. Their union was blessed with four children: Jamie (Randy) Rockwell, Jerry Kittelson, Jim (Lorene) Kittelson, and Jackie (David) Henderson. James was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Rick (Laura) Kittelson, Randy Rockwell, Kristi Rockwell, Stefenie Kittelson, Douglas Kittelson, Michael Henderson, and Jared Henderson. He also delighted in his seven great-grandchildren: Cory and Molly Kittelson, Joseph Kittelson, Isabella and Mason Harding, Owen Rockwell, and Kayden Schueller. His cousin, Walter Kittelson, along with many nieces and nephews, also survive him.

James's early education was in a small country school where he completed eight grades. Although he did not attend high school, his thirst for knowledge led him to graduate from a two-year business course at a college in Bottineau, North Dakota. After his schooling, he served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from March 28, 1946, to September 27, 1947, and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal. He spent part of his service in Okinawa, Japan, as a stock clerk in the medic unit and was recognized as a rifle marksman.

James found his professional calling in the printing industry, where he worked tirelessly for 40 years. His career began at the Bottineau Newspaper and took him to the Itemizer Observer in Dallas, Oregon, Knapp Printing in Salem, and finally, the State of Oregon Printing Shop, where he retired in December 1990.

A man of deep faith, James was baptized, confirmed, and joined Trinity Lutheran Church in Dallas, Oregon, in May 1956. He was an active member of the church council and contributed to the Boy Scouts. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and participated in various auto and engine clubs, including the Brooks Antique Powerland. He spent additional time at the Square Dance Club.

James had a passion for collecting and restoring antique water-cooled engines, John Deere tractors, and old Ford cars, including two Mustangs. In retirement, this hobby became his life's work. He built his own shop and spent summers with his grandchildren at Brooks Powerland, where they delighted in the fruits of his labor.

Known for his playful teasing and generous spirit, James was a true jack-of-all-trades, always eager to tackle any task himself. His family fondly remembers his ability to fix anything, from unclogging sinks to constructing his shop.

His family shares, "He was a good father, grandfather, and husband. He was a strong family man and will be very missed by all." His legacy of love, hard work, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
