James Axel Kittelson

James Axel Kittelson September 5, 1978 - June 5, 2026

James Axel Kittelson, 47, of Salem, Oregon, passed away on June 5, 2026. He was born on September 5, 1978, in Salem, Oregon, to Lorene and James R. Kittelson and was raised in the Salem community.

James attended McKay High School and continued his education at Chemeketa Community College. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, earning the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Certificate of Appreciation, and Rifle Expert Badge. He was trained in law enforcement as a Correctional Specialist and was honorably released from active duty on October 10, 2004.

Following his military service, James dedicated over 20 years to a career in corrections. He began with the Oregon Department of Corrections, where he rose to the rank of Correctional Sergeant. James was deeply respected by both his coworkers and those in his care. He had a gift for understanding people and was known for taking time to talk with anyone who needed support. He was hardworking, dependable, and always willing to step in and help when needed.

Outside of work, James enjoyed bike riding, he was a gun enthusiast & going to the rifle range with his son and other friends. He appreciated the outdoors and valued time spent with others.

James is survived by his beloved son, Joseph Axel Kittelson his father, James R. Kittelson; his mother, Lorene Kittelson; his sister, Stefenie Kittelson; his brothers, Douglas Kittelson and Ricky Kittelson; his sister-in-law, Laura Kittelson; and his niece and nephew, Cory and Molly Kittelson. He is also survived by his grandparents, James and Jenette Kittelson, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A service to honor and celebrate James's life will be held on June 17th at 2:00 pm at Restlawn Funeral Home Memory Gardens It will be at the Grave Side with family and friends. There will be Military honors along with Oregon Department of Correctional color guard.

A personal note from his parents: Jimmy, you were our first son, our heart, and one of our greatest prides. We will forever hold onto the memories we shared and the man you became-strong, kind, and always willing to help others.

You have always been independent, even from the age of 6. On your first day of school, you insisted on going in by yourself and announced that your name was James (but you will always be Jimmy in our hearts). You will always be deeply loved and never forgotten.

Jimmy will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication, and the quiet way he showed up for others. He made a lasting impact on many lives and will be deeply missed.
