Donald James Casida

January 2, 1925 — August 15, 2025

Donald "Don" James Casida passed away on August 15, 2025 while at home on hospice care at 100-years-old. He was born on January 2, 1925 in Bell, California to Delmer Jennings Casida and Jessie Eugenia (Maier) Casida. Don was the oldest of four children. He was raised in Downey, California.

Don attended Downey High School. During his senior year of high school and when he turned 18, Don was drafted into the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he received a graduation certificate. He served as an instructor and remained stateside during WWII.

After he honorably served in the Navy, Don went on to earn a Bachelors' Degree at University of California Santa Barbara, majoring in education. He then earned a Masters' Degree in education from University of Southern California. But Don loved learning so much, he attended post graduate programs at University of Oregon, Portland State, and Fresno State.

Don was married to Patricia Atkins for a time. They had three children together: Pam Hazouri, Jeff Casida, and Steve Casida. They also have four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Don married Mellie Ann Bergevin Harding in September of 1984. They met in Salem Hospital while Don was recovering, and Mellie was the nurse assigned to his care. Before he was discharged, he charmed her with a smile and asked, "Can I call you to share a low sodium meal?" Ever the timeless romantic, Don believed love could arrive at any age and in the most unexpected places.

During his life, Don was a teacher, coach, and principal in Bakersville, California and Cottage Grove, Oregon. He finished his career as a program executive for Oregon State Education Department. Don was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he often served as a Boy Scout leader. He was also president of the local Rotary Club, president of the Lions Club, and a member of the local Phi Delta Kappa chapter. Don's hobbies included playing the trumpet and listening to music. He was very interested in most high school sports, car racing, and enjoyed following the stock market.

Don will be remembered for his caring nature and the encouragement he gave to youth, as well as for his friendliness and willingness to help others. Known for his ready smile and good sense of humor, Don brought warmth and lightheartedness to those around him. A gifted storyteller, he cherished visiting with family, friends, and neighbors, sharing his time and conversation generously.

Don is survived by his wife, Mellie; his children, Pam and Steve; his four grandchildren; and his three great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his son, Jeff, his siblings, and his parents.
