Darrel Dwayne Holmes

April 17, 1940 — October 4, 2025

On October 4th, Darrel went to be with The Lord. He was born in Forest Grove, OR to parents Dwayne & Eleanor Holmes, resided in Salem and Keizer most of his life. He graduated from North Salem High School in 1958 and then attended Oregon College of Education. His first career was as a bricklayer (22 years) working on many large commercial projects, as well as residential. He was a past president of Bricklayers Local #5 and later received his Gold Life membership card from the Bricklayers International Union. After a serious construction accident, he attended Chemeketa College and studied building codes, and after graduation he worked as a building inspector and building official. He returned to the college and began his second career as program chair for the Building Inspection Technology Department. He gave instructional building codes and related construction classes and provided seminars for Oregon Building Officials Educational Institute and other construction organizations. Upon his retirement, he was presented with "The Outstanding Achievement Award" by Oregon Building Officials Association. He was a member of the National Education Association, American Concrete Institute, The Masonry Society, and life member of the Salem Elks and Salem Eagles. He attended The People's Church for many years. Darrel had many hobbies, which included flying his own plane, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles and driving his Corvette, and was a longtime member of the Willamette Valley Corvette Association. Before his retirement, he traveled with his wife, Lois, to building code and construction classes all over the United States. After retirement, he and Lois Motor homed all over the country, and enjoyed spending part of the winters in Palm Springs and Yuma. Darrel was preceded in death by his wife Lois, his parents, sister Connie, and his cousin and lifelong friend, Gaylen Springer. He is survived by his brother Dennis Holmes (companion, Laveryne Gray) companion Yien Seachao, sons Troy Holmes of Monroe, OR, Tracy Holmes and wife Kathleen of Lubbock, TX, two granddaughters Leanna Myton (husband Josh) and Jenna Holmes (husband Leland) and 4 great grandchildren, WA State.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Union Gospel Mission or The People's Church.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Roselawn Cemetery in Dalles OR. Another announcement will be placed on day and time of service.
