    Virginia Louise Long

    April 14, 1928 - April 5, 2010

Virginia passed away on April 5, 2010 at the age of 81, nine days short of being 82. Virginia was born at home near Arlie, OR to Leone Link and Homer Link, a very old Oregon family that came to Oregon in the late 1860's. Franklin Link, her grandfather, ran the stage coach stop between Salem and Independence. Homer and a sister were born there in a log house. Virginia grew up thru the Depression at the sheep ranch her father owned at Pedee. She rode around on the back of the saddle for years with her father. Five years later Shelia Link was born, her only sister. Virginia attended a one room school 1st thru 8th grades. She didn't like school there at Montgomery school. When Camp Adair was formed they took Homer's sheep ranch in as part of the army base. Next her father passed away. The family moved to Monmouth where she attended high school. After graduating from high school she attended O.C.E. and married Ovid Long, July 8, 1947. They had their sons Carl, Steve, and Paul. She always wanted a girl, but it didn't happen. Virginia was a good homemaker and raised three boys to be doctors and engineers and Carl with double degrees. She helped do the payroll on our row crop farm and ran the household very well. She is survived by her husband, Ovid; her sister; three sons; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren (Drs. Alisa and Erik); one great grandchild, Matilda; and four step grandchildren; plus many other relatives. She loved to grow flowers and garden. She was very good at it. Her family will miss her very much, especially those great Christmas dinners and Thanksgiving turkey dinners. A graveside service will be held for family and friends at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 10 at Restlawn Memory Gardens. Contributions to the Pulmonary Society or your favorite charity. The family would like to thank all the people in ICU at Salem Hospital for their expert care.
