    Oleta C. Johnston

    August 28, 1928 - January 28, 2021

Oleta Callie Johnston 8/28/28-1/28/21 was born the third youngest of nine children of William Franklin Bowden Sr. and Callie Vivian Murray in Tahlequah, OK, the capital of the Cherokee Nation. As a young child, Oleta knew she wanted to teach. She graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in 1950 and began teaching at Greenleaf Elementary. Oleta met Dewey Johnston at NNC, married him in 1951, and divorced in 1964. They had four children: Annette (Reginald) Finger; Joy (Chuck) Lawyer; Geron Mark Johnston; and Jan Dwyer. Oleta taught kindergarten and elementary children in various settings for 45+ years. She moved to Stayton in 1972 and retired at age 70. Oleta’s pride and joy were her 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Her passions were Family Reunions, Holiday Parties, and Birthday Celebrations-all reasons to gather the family and friends. She was also proud of her Cherokee heritage. Oleta had an enduring spirit through many adversities which made her compassionate toward others. She led a monthly gathering of Lovely Ladies for 20+ years to encourage local women. Oleta will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and faith which guided her love of family and friends.
